The College of Science

Our College has been experiencing tremendous change since 2000. Over 40 new faculty have been added to our ranks to replace retirements and each of these fine young scientists has brought with them new energy, new ideas and high level of commitment to excellence. Among the many achievements taking place in the College of Science have been:

1. Several new patents and patent applications dealing with alternative fuels and nano-materials
2. A five-fold increase in external grant awards from $2M/yr in 2002 up to $11M/yr in 2008
3. Over three hundred peer reviewed publications in respected journals each year
4. Nine NSF CAREER awardees in Chemistry & Physics
5. Prestigious international awards granted to faculty
6. Seven faculty named Fellows or Diplomats by their professional peers
7. Doctoral programs active in every academic department
8. Dynamic interdisciplinary research culture established among COS researchers
9. New NSF IGERT program awarded in 2009
10. Undergraduate students named to USA Today All-USA Academic Team in 2009
11. A new joint program in Nursing with SIUE available to undergraduates on SIUC campus

As the College moves forward with its agenda for the next 5 years with a new Dean in place the following goals have been set:

1. Increase faculty positions by 20 new positions
2. Increase research grant funding to $17M/yr by 2013
3. Expand upon gains made in alternative energy and nano-materials research
4. Expand biomedical research within the College and in collaboration with the School of Medicine at SIU.
5. Increase graduate enrollments by 20%

Increase undergraduate enrollments in selected degrees by 10-30%
