Carl Jennings was born in Equality, Illinois, and was the oldest of five children (all of whom attended SIU). After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Illinois, Carl joined the GAF Corporation in Binghamton, New York, where he held a series of research and development and manufacturing assignments in the photographic industry. He joined BASF Corporation in 1977 as Assistant to the Vice President, Chemicals, in Wyandotte, Michigan, and from 1980 to 1991 he held positions with BASF in Agricultural Chemicals. In 1992 he was promoted to Executive Vice President of BASF Corporation and President of its Chemicals Division in Mount Olive, New Jersey.
Jennings is a member of the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Chemical Manufacturers Association, and the Society of Chemical Industry. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Elizabeth's College (Morristown, New Jersey), the Independent College Fund of New Jersey, and the Southern Illinois University Foundation. In 1997 he received the Alumni Achievement Award from SIUC and was inducted into the Department of Chemistry Alumni Hall of Fame in 1998.
