The event is one of 48 such symposia conducted nationwide. Five finalists from the IJSHS research paper presentations were awarded expense-paid trips to participate in the 39th National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, April 25-29, 2001, in Orlando, Florida, in cooperation with the Orlando science and technology community. The five finalists (in alphabetical order), their schools, their sponsoring teachers, and the titles of their papers are:

  • Albert Chu, Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Mr. Thomas Koenigsberger/Dr. Anna Lysakowski (University of Illinois at Chicago), "Preliminary Morphological Analysis of Vestibular Hair Cell Ultrastructure in the Hypergravity-Stimulated Long-Evans Rat Utricular Macula"
  • Sachin Desai, Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Mr. Thomas Koenigsberger/Leonard Valentino, MD (RUSH Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center), "Effects of Warfarin on the A549 Cell Line as a Model for the Treatment of Neurofibromatosis 1"
  • Ryan Rappa, University High School, Dr. Carol Benson/Dr. Daniel Holland (Illinois State University), "Characterization of Chaotic Particle Dynamics in the Earth's Magnetotail"
  • Krista Taake, Waterloo High School, Mr. Randy Halleran/Dr. Beverly Friend, "Identification of Coffee Bean Origin Using High Pressure Liquid Chromatography"
  • Florence Twu, Naperville North High School, Mrs. Beverly George/Dr. Stephen Johnston (North Central College, Naperville), "Ubiquitin Suppresses the RAS Oncogene in a Mechanism Likely Mediated by Histone H2B in Saccharomyces cerevisiae"

Ryan Rappa of University High School won the regional competition and received a $4,000 undergraduate tuition scholarship from the U.S. Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. He presented his paper and competed at the National JSHS.

Dr. Carol Benson, Ryan's sponsoring teacher, received a $500 Faculty Award, honoring her contributions to advancing student participation in research.

Congratulations, Ryan and Dr. Benson!

The second place finalist, Florence Twu of Naperville North High School, was the recipient of an SIUC Academic Scholarship, valued at up to $4,500, to major in science at SIUC. Congratulations, Florence!

The second place finalist was unable to present her paper at the National JSHS. However, Krista Taake presented her paper, "Identification of Coffee Bean Origin Using High Pressure Liquid Chromatography," in the non-competitive session at the National JSHS. Thanks for your cooperative spirit, Krista!

Jonathan Bevis, a junior at Herrin High School, won 1st place in the Illinois JSHS Poster Session with "Studies of Growth and Development in Meal Worms & Lab Mice." His teacher is Mr. Larry Kepple, and his mentor is Dr. Andrzej Bartke, Department of Physiology, SIU School of Medicine. Congratulations, Jonathan!
