The 27th Annual Illinois Junior Science & Humanities Symposium was held on the campus of Southern Illinois University Carbondale April 3-5, 2005. The program is made possible through the cooperative efforts of the U.S. Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, The Academy of Applied Science, and the College of Science at SIUC.
Almost 150 SIUC faculty, staff, postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate students, as well as student organizations, Illinois JSHS alumni, and external agencies volunteered their time and resources in assistance of the program.
Participating campus programs, units, and student organizations included: Aerospace Studies (AFROTC), Army Military Science (ROTC), Center for Advanced Friction Studies, Center for Archaeological Investigations, Center for Environmental Health & Safety, Coal Research Center, College of Agriculture, College of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts, Constituent Relations & Special Events, Fisheries & Illinois Aquaculture Center, IMAGE, Library Affairs, Materials Technology Center, Media & Communication Resources, New Student Admissions Services, Office of Intramural Recreational Sports, Office of the Chancellor, Office of the President, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research & Graduate Dean, and SIU School of Medicine.
Outside program support was provided by Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

The keynote presentation, "Our Energy Challenge," was delivered by Richard Smalley, Ph.D., winner of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
The banquet presentation, "Anomalies and Curiosities with Tom Ulrich," was delivered by Tom J. Ulrich, internationally acclaimed wildlife photographer and SIUC alumnus (B.A. '71, Biological Sciences).
All presenters received Illinois JSHS medals at the banquet at Giant City State Lodge.
Young scientists and their teachers visited the laboratories of SIUC researchers to participate in hands-on activities and learn about ongoing research efforts.
The event is one of 48 such symposia conducted nationwide. Five finalists and alternates from the IJSHS research paper presentations were extended the opportunity of expense-paid trips to participate in the 43rd National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, April 27-May 1, 2005, in San Diego, CA, in cooperation with the U.S. Navy and the Greater San Diego area scientific community. Those who attended the national symposium in California included Linda Martin, director of the statewide IJSHS event and assistant dean of the SIUC College of Science, and high students Anna Czapar of Springfield, Iboro Umana of Carbondale, Anna Dowling of Rochester, Jordan Benson of Deerfield and Andrew Bevis of Herrin. Others attending included Jolynn Smith, assistant regional symposium director, and Dr. and Mrs. Ukeme Umana. Among the National JSHS highlights for the students in California was a presentation by Robert Ballard, Ph.D., President of the Institute for Exploration at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT and Director of the Institute for Archaeological Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography. He is probably best known for his 1985 discovery of the wreckage of the RMS Titanic. Students also visited the world-class San Diego Zoo and a variety of nearby military sites and research centers.

Anna Czapar of Rochester High School won the regional competition and received a $1,500 undergraduate tuition scholarship, Abhi Gulati of the Illinois Math & Science Academy received 2nd place and received a $1,000 undergraduate tuition scholarship, and Iboro Umana of Carbondale Community High School received 3rd place and received a $500 undergraduate tuition scholarship. The scholarships are provided through funding from the U.S. Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Anna and Iboro presented their papers and competed at the National JSHS.
Mr. Don Wohlers, Anna's sponsoring teacher, received a $500 Faculty Award, honoring his contributions to advancing student participation in research.
Here are those who competed in the paper session at the regional competition, listed alphabetically. Entries also include information about their high schools, teacher, regional finish, and science research topics.
