Lecture: MICROBIOLOGY Foundations in Microbiology 6th edition. 2008. By Kathleen P. Talaro. ISBN 978-0-07-299489-6. Available at the University Bookstore and other textbook stores in Carbondale.
Laboratory: Laboratory Manual for Microbiology 201. Available from Kopies and More, 811 S. Illinois Avenue. Laboratory supplies (flame resistant lab coat or apron, black Sharpie pen, box of microscope slides, lens paper -not bibulous paper, bound lab notebook -e.g. National Blank Book Company composition book) must also be purchased (available in the bookstores). Goggles are recommended for eye protection during certain operations, but are not required.
LECTURE GRADES:
Four hourly exams (100 points each) will be given during the semester (see Lecture Schedule). The fourth houly exam will be given on final exam day along with the comprehensive final exam (100 points). Your lowest 100 point hourly exam grade will be dropped (not the 100 point comprehensive section however). If, for any reason, you miss one of the hourly exams during the semester, that will be your dropped exam grade. NO MAKEUP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN.

Hourly exams .................300 (after dropping the lowest of Exams 1-4) Comprehensive exam .....100
Total from lecture.............400 points
Laboratory attendance is mandatory. There is no "short cut" method for learning microbiological techniques; you must be present and participate. Twelve points plus any quiz points will be deducted for each missed lab unless you provide documented proof of an acceptable excuse (illness, mandatory attendance at a University function). Any student who misses MORE THAN TWO lab periods must see Dr. Haddock to regain entry to the lab.
On Wednesdays there will be a 10 point lab quiz covering the purpose and procedure for the current week's exercise(s). Fourteen lab quizzes will be given in all and the two lowest grades will be dropped. If you miss a lab quiz, that will be a dropped quiz grade. NO MAKEUP QUIZZES WILL BE GIVEN.
Notebooks will be due four times during the semester (see Laboratory Schedule in the Lab Manual).
Laboratory technique will be a part of your laboratory grade. This will include points earned during demonstration of certain laboratory techniques that you will make with your TA. The demonstrations will test key microbiological skills you should develop by doing the weekly laboratory experiments. The lab technique points will also include an evaluation of your use of laboratory time. You are expected to be in the laboratory and ready to work when class begins and to make good use of the three hours of time available to you each week. In addition, difficulties with punctuality or attendance can result in the loss of additional laboratory points. Role may be taken at any time during the laboratory period.

In addition, to pass this course a student must have received at least 60% on one or more lecture exams!
Course objectives: To provide the student with an understanding of the basic concepts and methodology of the discipline of microbiology. This includes: 1. chemistry, taxonomy, genetics, metabolism, pathogenicity, diseases and control of microorganisms that affect human health, and 2.) hands on experience in a laboratory using the basic techniques that are commonly employed in the modern microbiology laboratory.

Tips for studying for Microbiology 201: Print out the chapter notes from the web site before lecture and bring them to class so you can spend more time listening and less time writting. Start studying early. Review of lecture material as soon as possible after the lecture is the best way to study for this course. This means that the evening following a lecture you should sit down for approximately one hour and go through your notes, highlighting the important points and filling in any gaps using your text book. Think about the lecture while you are doing thiswhat points were emphasized or seemed most important? Then read or re-read the text material relating to this lecture while you have your notes in front of you; pay particular attention to what you perceived as key points and to figures from the text which were discussed in class. If you do this two weeks (or even two days) later, you will not achieve nearly the learning benefit of immediate reinforcement i.e. studying a lecture the day of the lecture. Staying on top of the material will payyour notes will be clear and you will have adequate time to ask any questions you may have.
