Slide 24

Thymus from unspecified source.
Age of source is unspecified for slides in Slide Boxes 1,2,-,4,5,6,7,8,9; in Slide Box 3 the slide is labelled "adult" (i.e., with less-active production of lymphocytes).

At low power, note organization into rounded lobules, with more-intense stain in medullary areas (toward lobule centers) and less intense in cortex.  The difference in stain intensity reflects texture and distribution of nuclei.  Regions closely-packed with small cells having dense, heterochromatic nuclei yield more intense basophilia, while regions with numerous growing, dividing cells appear paler.

Compare this slide with slide 23, which shows a more-active thymus from a newborn.
