Slide 36

Esophagus and trachea

In Boxes 1, 2, 9, the source is unspecified and the plane of section is longitudinal.

In Boxes 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, the source is rabbit and the plane of section is transverse.

Examine this slide first by naked eye, to note all tissue regions and to distinguish the trachea (large, open lumen, lined by pseudostratified columnar epithelium) from the esophagus (thick musclular wall, lined by stratified squamous epithelium).  The several distinct tissue differences between these two "tubes" are related to their separate functions.

For more, see trachea, also slides 57, 58.

For more, see esophagus, slides 35, 37, 57.
