Charles R. Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, a birth date he shares with Abraham Lincoln. Darwin's work has had a profound and ongoing effect on our views of humankind's place in nature, and it forms the very core of biological science. Or, as the late geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky put it, "Nothing in biology makes sense, except in the light of evolution." We, like many other universities, are using Darwin's birthday as an occasion to educate the public, as well as to celebrate his legacy.

Our principal speaker for Darwin Day 2008 will be Dr. Sean B. Carroll, Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics and an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Carroll is the author of several books (including Endless Forms Most Beautiful: The New Science of Evo Devo and The Making of the Fittest: DNA and the Ultimate Forensic Record of Evolution, both selected as Top Science Books of the Year by USA Today) and numerous scientific papers. Dr. Carroll's lecture, entitled The Making of the Fittest: DNA and the Ultimate Forensic Record of Evolution will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19 in the SIUC Student Center Auditorium and will be free and open to the public. A reception and book signing will follow the lecture. Note that the talk has been rescheduled from February 12 -- it will now be presented on February 19th!

Darwin Day 2008 is sponsored by the Departments of Zoology, Geology and Microbiology, and by Sigma Xi.

These little Darwins come complete with Darwin's birth and death dates inscribed on the base (you'll never forget Darwin Day again!). They are pretty hefty, weighing in at about 550g (1 lb, 3 ounces for those of you who cannot abide the metric system), and they stand approximately 19 cm (7.5 inches) tall. They are made of some sort of polyresin, and it seems pretty solid. These guys made them, if you want to check out their credentials.

Every Darwin fan and every biology lab needs one of these -- what better way to assure the success of your experiments (and thought processes) than to have Charles Darwin overseeing everything?

If would like to order a Darwin bobblehead, you have two options:

1. PayPal (this allows you to pay via credit card, debit card or a PayPal account).

2. Check, well-concealed US currency or money order.

Official PayPal Seal

TO USE PAYPAL: Use the table below to calculate the shipping cost for your bobbleheads. Add that value to the total for the bobbleheads, then click one of the "Make A Donation" buttons below.

NOTE: You will have to manually enter the appropriate total cost for the number of bobbleheads you want PLUS the shipping cost on the PayPal website.

Here's an example:

To order three bobbleheads and have them shipped to Seattle, Washington, the total cost would be ($17 x 3 = $51) for the bobbleheadds themselves, plus (from the table below) $13 for shipping = $64 US.

TO PAY BY CHECK/MONEY ORDER/CASH: Mail your check/money order/cash for the appropriate amount ($17/bobblehead + shipping; see the table below; check/money order made payable to SIUC or Southern Illinois University) with your mailing address to:
