William G. Dyer (1929-2006)
Dr. William Gerald Dyer was born October 27, 1929, in Boston, MA, to James J. and Margaret (Moran) Dyer. He served in the U.S. Navy, 3rd Marine Division, from 1948 to 1952. He received his Bachelor's degree in Biology from Boston University in 1957 and his Master's in Physiology in 1958, also at Boston University. After being in the work force for several years, he continued his studies. He received his Ph.D. in Zoology with a specialty in Parasitology from Colorado State University in 1965. He married Carol Ann Knecht in August 1965 in Ft. Collins, Colorado; they subsequently raised two sons -- David and Richard. After leaving Colorado, Dr. Dyer taught at Minot State College (ND) before joining the Department of Zoology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1969. He became Associate Dean of Instructiion in the College of Science in 1976 and continued in that position until he retired in 2002. In 1998, he received the College of Science Outstanding Teacher Award. He was a visiting professor at the University of Puerto Rico in the Department of Marine Sciences and was a Research Associate in the Caribbean Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory also at the University of Puerto Rico. In 2000, he was the recipient of the Kaplan Research Award of the Society of Sigma Xi. He taught and influenced numerous undergraduate and graduate students. He founded the Iota Zeta Chapter of Beta Beta Beta Biology Honor Society at SIUC. He was active in many areas of the university, his publications numbered over 100, and he served as Speciality Editor on Digenetic Flukes for the Association of Island Marine Laboratories of the Caribbean. He died at home on June 18, 2006, after a brief illness with lung cancer.
