George Garoian (1927-2005)
Dr. George Garoian was born in July 1927 in Deadwood, South Dakota, the son of George and Carolyn (Anderson) Garoian; he died in May 2005. During World War II, he served in the U.S.Navy. He received a Bachelor's of Arts in Zoology from Washington University in St. Louis in 1949. In August of 1954, he married Diana Kratoville; they proudly raised a son (Scott) and daughter (Suzanne). Garoian advanced his education at the University of Illinois and received his MS in 1951 and PhD degree in 1956. Then he joined the faculty at SIU, serving as Chair of the Department of Zoology from 1971-1973. He taught various general and advanced zoology courses, especially in the invertebrate offerings of the Department plus advanced courses, such as, Protozoology, Parasitology, Helminthology, and two field courses -- Natural History of the Invertebrates and Freshwater Invertebrates. Among his graduate students, 15 earned Master's and 5 received PhD degrees. At SIUC, he served on many college and university committees. Off campus, he was President and Executive Board member of the Association of Midwestern College Biology Teachers plus the Executive Secretary/Treasurer of the Annual Midwestern Conference of Parasitologists. He was visiting professor at Westminister College in New Wilmington, PA, in 1989 and taught at Southern Illinois University in Nakajo, Japan, in 1990.
