Herman J. Haas (1914-1976)
Professor Herman Josef Haas taught and conducted research in developmental biology at SIUC from 1963 until his death in 1976 from colon cancer. His background and scope of interests were broad. For example, the concept of cybernetics fascinated him. In time, he created and taught upper-level courses in "Teleology and Optimality in Biological Systems" and "Emergence of Order in Biological Systems." He was born in Ingolstadt, Germany, on 10 January 1914. From 1931-33, he served in the German Army. Next, he was in the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) from 1933-45 as a pilot with the rank of Major. In 1954, he obtained his doctorate degree in Zoology at Göttingen, West Germany. He held a position with the Max-Planck Institut from 1955-57 before emigrating to the USA and taking a position in developmental biology at the Rockefeller Institute (1957-59). After working subsequently in Minnesota and South Dakota, he joined SIU as an Associate Professor of Zoology and moved his family to Carbondale. He and his wife Beth were married in 1961; they raised two children.
