Slide44

Small intestine, three regions, unspecified (nonhuman) source. This slide includes three separate sections, representing duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Each region can be distinguished by particular features. In the duodenum, mucous glandular tissue (Brunner's glands) appears in the submucosa (although the slides in some slide boxes include only a small amount of these glands). In the ileum (shown above), lymphoid tissue of Peyer's patches is conspicuous. The section which lacks both Brunner's glands and Peyer's patches represents jejunum.
The proportion of goblet cells increases downward along the small intestine, so on this slide the duodenum specimen should have the fewest goblet cells and the ileum the most.
