Slide 86

Nerve spread, unspecified source. Silver stain.
This is not a section. A small snippet of a peripheral nerve has been dissected free, its sheath (epineurium) removed, and the nerve fibers teased apart.
This specimen shows mostly large myelinated fibers. The axon may appear as a darker line within the paler myelin cylinder, but less-than-idea fixation has compromised this appearance.
Nodes of Ranvier should appear as distinctly "pinched" points, resembling the joints between sausages in a string of hot dogs (although the internodes are very much longer, in proportion, than hot dogs).
