Facilities

My laboratory is located on the first floor of SIUC's Life Science III (LS-III) building. LS-III is a relatively new facility whose construction was completed in 1995. The first floor laboratories include a group of evolutionary geneticists from several departments (myself, Ed Heist, and Kamal Ibrahim from Zoology, Dan Nickrent from Plant Biology, and Laurie Achenbach from Microbiology), as well as two molecular biologists (David Clark and John Haddock from Microbiology). Faculty and student offices are located at one end of the building, with labs at the other. My lab suite consists of one large prep room, an adjacent PCR room, a cloning room, and a smaller prep room across the hall. One of these rooms houses a Pharmacia ALFexpress automated DNA sequencing unit for sequencing cloned templates. PCR products are sequenced directly on an ABI 377 unit in an adjacent laboratory.

A fully equipped darkroom is next to the lab. Major items of equipment in my lab include four PCR machines, four sequencing rigs and high-voltage power supplies, two BioRad gel driers, one regular and one refrigerated IEC centrifuge, three standard and one refrigerated microfuges, two Speed Vac units, a small Revco ultracold freezer, incubator shakers, numerous agarose gel boxes and power supplies. An adjacent common room includes two ultracentrifuges, two high-speed centrifuges, and two large Revco ultracold freezers. My graduate students occupy an office adjacent to mine. The office houses three students, has a telephone, and is equipped with two PCs with Ethernet connections to the SIU network, internet, and worldwide web. My lab group has the following computer hardware and peripherals: one 386/25 MHZ CompuAdd PC with hand-held scanner, one 486/66 MHz IBM PC, one Pentium II/100 MHz Zeos PC, one Pentium/400 MHz Dell PC, one Athlon/1 GHz Gateway PC with flatbed b/w scanner, one Pentium III/1.5 GHz Dell PC with color scanner, one Pentium III/1 GHz Dell Inspiron laptop, one PowerMac G3, one PowerMac G4, and three HP laser printers.
