Course description:

Wildlife biologists and managers face the challenge of meeting the demands of society while maintaining ecological integrity. Some wildlife species are at risk of extinction, whereas others cause environmental damage because they are very abundant or have been introduced into areas where they are not native. All types of wildlife are affected by actions of humans, who possess a wide range of values and attitudes surrounding wildlife. This course is intended to introduce the ecological and social concepts that form the basis of modern wildlife biology. Areas of emphasis include wildlife interactions with their abiotic and biotic environment, ways that humans impact and perceive wildlife, and implications for management decisions.

100 pts -- Exam I
100 pts -- Exam II
150 pts -- Final Exam

Homework & Quizzes
- Exams I and II are noncumulative. The final exam will cover material included in exams I and II (75 pts) and new material (75 pts)
- Quizzes occur on most Mondays (see lecture schedule), and cover readings assigned for that day and for the preceding Wednesday and Friday
- Final grades MAY be "curved" only if average grade is exceptionally low
- Make-up exams are normally not given; circumstances must meet SIUC regulations
- Some material in the readings will not be covered in lecture, and vice versa. You will be responsible for both!
- Please contact me (in person, or by phone or email) if you are having trouble with the material in this course – I’d be glad to help you understand it better or work on stronger study habits
