At SIUC, Robert J. Sheehan was Professor of Zoology and Assistant Director of the Fisheries and Illinois Aquaculture Center when he died suddenly on 3 June 2002 from occulusion of his pulmonary arteries. He was born in Chicago (IL) on 13 March 1950. In 1973, he obtained his B.S. degree in Biology at Northeastern Illinois University. Subsequently, he continued his studies in Zoology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he earned his M.S. in 1976 and Ph.D. in 1984. Periodically during 1981-1983, he served in the position of Reseacher in the SIUC Fisheries Research Lab. Upon receiving his Ph.D. degree, he accepted an Assistant Professor of Fisheries position at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from 1984-86. Dr. Sheehan then joined the Department of Zoology at SIUC in 1986 as Assistant Professor and furthered his career in the Fisheries Research Lab. He taught a variety of courses, such as, Comparative Endocrinology, Advanced Fish Culture, Environmental Physiology of Fish, and Fish Culture Techniques. He enjoyed his work and especially took pride in his graduate students, including their research and accomplishments. His research interests and publications centered on large river fisheries management, environmental physiology and toxicology, endangered species, plus the performance and development of aquaculture stocks.
