Dr. Alan Woolf was born on December 19, 1940, in Mount Vernon, NY, to Leon and Frieda (Marcus) Woolf. He earned a BachelorŐs degree in Wildlife Management at Cornell University in 1962. Then he studied bighorn sheep in Yellowstone National Park for his MasterŐs degree, which he received from Colorado State University in 1967. For the next three years, he interrupted his education to serve as an Army officer in the demilitarized zone of Korea. Subsequently, he return to Cornell University to earn a PhD degree in Wildlife Science in 1972. In April 1977, he married Jill Bairhalter in Ligonier, Pennsylvania; they raised with pride their daughter Rachel. Dr. Woolf began his work at Southern Illinois University in 1979 and became Director of the Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory in 1987 -- a position he held until his death at the age of 63 on 12 April 2004, following a long battle with cancer. Dr. Woolf published widely, regularly taught Wildlife Administration and Policy (Zool 464) and Wildlife Diseases (Zool 530), and directed the work of numerous graduate students. He had a lifelong passion for aviation, held a commercial pilot's license, and at one time was the co-pilot of a Learjet crew, as well as an active pilot at SIU's Air Institute and Service for a dozen years.
